The Tränenpalast:
East Berlin’s Crossroads of Emotions, Afro-Asian Histories, and Concerts

During the “high season” of German reunification memory politics in early November, Maria Ketzmerick-Calandrino attended an event at the Tränenpalast, a site that reflects its layered history as a border post, a music venue, and now a museum. Beneath its well-documented narratives lie hidden Afro-Asian histories that remain largely unexplored. The Palace of Tears challenges the common perception of the Berlin Wall as an impermeable barrier—at least for a select few. Through the mobility it facilitated, the Tränenpalast occupies a unique position in the memory politics of divided Berlin and deserves greater recognition within these discussions.
